The on-going coronavirus emergency has rightly drawn great attention to the importance of regular and effective handwashing to minimise the spread of infection and disease. Healthcare workers are already familiar with the concept and recommended process of hand-decontamination, yet historically, compliance rates have been largely inadequate. The risk of Covid-19 will, no doubt, be making a marked improvement in compliance rates, and not just for those at the frontline of healthcare.
In fact, the Coronavirus has made us all healthcare workers and, if we are to protect our NHS, our communities, in particular the elderly and unwell, we all need to practice and comply with best-practice hand-hygiene protocols.
