From 12th to 15th September 2023 the 7th International Conference on Prevention & Infection Control (ICPIC) will take place in Geneva, a unique forum in the field of international infection control and prevention with around 1,200 participants from over 100 countries. Visit Tork, the Essity professional hygiene brand, at booth 25 and learn more about our Tork solutions to improve your compliance.
With the Multimodal Improvement Strategy, the World Health Organization (WHO) has developed guidelines for infection prevention and control in healthcare in order to establish framework conditions for compliance with hand hygiene and thus ensure the safety of patients and healthcare workers. Well-trained staff is the key to optimal hygiene in the work environment and to reducing nosocomial infections. Studies even show that hand hygiene, as indicated, prevents up to 50 percent of all infections acquired in healthcare.
To support healthcare professionals in implementing the highest hygiene standards, Tork has developed, among other things, the interactive Tork VR Hand Hygiene Training, which can be used to teach hand hygiene in a realistic environment. In addition, it is important to provide means that prevent the transmission of pathogens – especially products for hand washing and disinfection that have been developed for hygiene-critical environments, such as Tork alcohol-based hand disinfectants. Tork also provides recommendations for the best possible placement of dispensers, based on the WHO’s “5 moments for hand hygiene” and focusing on areas of healthcare facilities that are relevant to hygiene compliance. Indeed, research shows that proper dispenser placement has an impact on hand hygiene compliance.
As part of its symposium at ICPIC 2023, Tork will focus on the important topic of training and further education in the field of hand hygiene, accompanied by Prof. Dr. Frauke Mattner, who provides exciting insights into the practical implementation and the lessons learned from the pandemic, and Dr. Alexandra Peters, who presents concrete implementation strategies for hand and environmental hygiene:
Symposium: Training and education as critical part of WHO Multimodal Strategy

Dr. Alexandra Peters, Hôpitaux Universitaires de Genève (HUG)
Virtual reality training for better hand hygiene in healthcare
With the free Tork VR hand hygiene training for healthcare professionals, proper hand washing and disinfection procedures are virtually trained in a realistic environment. The interactive simulation has been specifically designed to make hand hygiene training more engaging and inspiring while targeting professionals with the skills needed to ensure hand hygiene. Although they are in a virtual world, users are confronted with real work situations and practice hand hygiene with their own hands. Your experiences can be transferred directly from the virtual to the real world.
The interactive training offers an uncomplicated and practical method for refreshing hygiene knowledge and specifications and enables specialist staff to train hand hygiene intensively and thus improve it in practice. The training program was developed in cooperation with leading international hygiene experts and is based on the 5 moments of hand hygiene of the World Health Organization (WHO).
“The exciting thing about this innovative virtual reality training is that it allows professionals to test their knowledge in a safe, simulative patient environment, receive direct feedback and learn from mistakes,” says Professor Didier Pittet, ICPIC Chairman and Director the Infection Control Program and the WHO Collaborating Center for Patient Safety at the University Hospital of Geneva.
