A resident of a Lowestoft care home has started his own drinks and snack station – promoting the importance of hydration among older adults and giving them a sense of purpose in their day-to-day life.
Malcolm Brown, 71, from The Dell, a branch of Wellbeing Care that provides residential, dementia and respite care, has set up a ‘Hydration Station’, where he serves other residents regular drinks and snacks throughout the day.
Known for his active lifestyle and love for sports, including watching recently promoted Lowestoft FC, Malcolm has always enjoyed physical activity and community involvement. This passion led him to volunteer for the tea run, and eventually inspired the creation of the ‘Hydration Station’.
The former HGV driver now operates a trolley stocked with a variety of drinks, including water, squash, and juice, encouraging and reminding other residents to stay hydrated. The trolley also offers biscuits and chocolate bars, making it an enjoyable way to engage with other residents and something they can look forward to each day.
For Malcolm, having responsibilities helps him to retain his independence and gives him a sense of purpose and routine, which are essential for mental wellbeing. He said: “Why can’t I help out around the home? I have two legs. I do enjoy doing it. We just muck in together and help each other out.”
Staying hydrated is particularly crucial for older adults as it helps prevent common health issues such as urinary tract infections, constipation, and cognitive decline. Proper hydration also supports better physical health, enhancing mobility and reducing the risk of falls.
Joy Henshaw, Regional Director of Wellbeing Care, said: “People often mistake Malcolm for not being a resident due to his active nature and involvement in the care home’s activities. This is proof to never judge a book by its cover. His enthusiasm and initiative has not only improved hydration among our residents but has also created a stronger sense of community within the home.”
The Dell places a focus on activities and responsibilities that promote engagement, happiness, and a sense of belonging among residents and staff.
