When it comes to getting your estate organised, often your attention will be on getting your finances in order, writing your will or planning your funeral. However, something many struggle to plan is their legacy. They want to be remembered in the right way and often worry that this isn’t something they can control. However, with the help of technology this definitely is something you can craft.
When you lose a loved one, you want to see them again one last time, to hear their voice, or to even see them move. Of course, this isn’t possible. This desire to ‘just hear them speak one last time’ is something that entrepreneur Ian Dibb (pictured) has experienced after losing his own mother and sister. This which led him to create Once I’ve Gone, a life planning platform that’s helping people leave their legacy and make sure they’re remembered in the right way.
This has been a huge help for funeral homes and professionals in the industry who have been offering the platform to customers as an additional service. Leaving a legacy is something that not many people know how to do, so to be able to offer them advice and a way of doing so has been extremely well received.
Here Ian discusses his advice on leaving video legacies and ensuring you’re remembered the right way.
Social media
It’s estimated that 300 million Facebook accounts belong to the deceased, holding sentimental pictures, videos and posts as a form of legacy. This type of platform has made it easy to find the voice of a loved one and this will never change. This figure is expected to rise into the billions over the next few decades, allowing friends and family to look at their pages as and when they please.
However, we all know how social media isn’t a true reflection of life, despite the volumes of memories it might hold. You want to be remembered by your loved ones in the right way, not the façade that social media creates of them. You don’t want to be remembered by the ones closest to you by the way you portrayed yourself to the rest of the world.
Personal videos
Videos are one of the best ways to leave a legacy and leave one final, lasting message to loved ones. Whether it’s saying something you couldn’t say to them directly, or just to say how much you love them one last time, you have the control over what you say. They have the power of letting them hear your voice and see you as you were, over and over again.
Of course, everyone knows the cliché videos, ‘If you’re watching this, it means I’m dead’, but it doesn’t need to be like this. Once I’ve Gone have created a way to leave personal videos, directly talking to a loved one and only shares them once you’ve gone.
