Young people from a care home in Lancashire have cycled 43 miles to raise over £1,160 in support of Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.
Using an exercise bike, young people and staff at Ashdene Children’s Home cycled 43.6 miles, the distance from their home to the hospital. In order to help raise money they asked for support from local businesses as well as family and friends. As part of the fundraising effort people donated raffle prizes, cakes and burgers, as well as making donations through the JustGiving page which was set up online. The children’s fundraising efforts were also helped with a significant donation from the CareTech Foundation.
On the day of the charity bike ride, the children’s home also hosted games, a tombola, face painting and an auction as well as selling food, cake and confectionery. The home invited families and friends of the young people and the staff and young people from other homes within ROC Northwest.
When deciding to hold the charity fundraising event, the young people from Ashdene children’s home wanted it to allow all the young people at Ashdene to be involved with preparations and able to take part, as well involving the local community. They organised a range of different activities so that everyone could excited about raising money for other children and young people in different situations from themselves.
Michelle Donaghey, Manager of Ashdene Children’s Home said: “It was amazing to raise so much money for this charity and all of the young people and staff at Ashdene were extremely proud of themselves. It is such a good cause knowing it’s helping young people to get better or making their last days or months more comfortable. It’s such an amazing hospital.”
Jonathan Freeman, CEO of the CareTech Foundation said: “I’m so glad the CareTech Foundation was able to support the young people at Ashdene Children’s Home in their fantastic efforts to help others. The dedication and commitment they’ve shown to raising money for this important cause is a testament to their characters, and the positive, caring environment engendered by the staff of Ashdene.”
