CBD, or cannabidiol is hot topic. Often touted as a ‘wonder product’ it is suggested to have benefits for a huge range of health challenges. Some of these potential benefits have promising preclinical and even clinical data to support them, others are anecdotal at best.
Our bodies contain cannabinoid receptors as part of our own endocannabinoid system. These are present in the brain, organs and other tissues throughout the body, and perform an essential role in many body functions. These can include regulating mood and anxiety, modulating immunity, causing / preventing pain, helping with natural sleep patterns, cognitive functions like memory, and temperature regulation.
The menopause is known to disrupt the endocannabinoid system, with cannabinoid receptors throughout the female reproductive system. There have been suggestions that CBD could act as a natural alternative to HRT.
It is true that CBD has been shown to bind with the oestrogen receptor. It is also true that a phytoestrogen found in cannabis called Apigenin displays high affinity for the oestrogen receptor. However, pre-clinical studies concluded that “direct estrogenic activity of cannabis extract could not be demonstrated in vivo”. So CBD is not technically an HRT alternative, however, CBD may help ease some of the symptoms of menopause, such as anxiety and reduced quality of sleep.
