Smokeless alternatives are quickly becoming popular amongst CBD enthusiast in recent years. Aside from obvious health reasons, such shift is also due to the increase in general consumer awareness and CBD knowledge. To stay competitive and relevant, smokeless CBD products should not only have to be innovative but should possess research and scientific data to support its offerings.
One such emerging trend in the smokeless CBD spectrum has been in-mouth pouches that require no ingestion. The CBD content in the pouch would be absorbed buccally via the mucosal tissues between the gums and cheek. This method of administration allows cannabinoids to be delivered directly to the bloodstream instead of via the digestive system, where efficacy can be largely reduced. The desired effects are thus also felt much quicker.
In 2020, Swedish based company Voon Innovations set out with a mission to further improve the offerings of an in-mouth CBD pouch product. With a team composed of scientists and Snus (in-mouth tobacco pouches) experts, Voon developed a proprietary formulation by incorporating a nano-emulsion technology to enhance bioavailability and absorption.
Why nano-technology? One of the biggest known challenges of developing a CBD product has been to convert the lipophilic CBD molecules to a water-soluble form for the human body to absorb. While this conversion has already been addressed in some smokeless CBD products such as drinks, the CBD still needs to pass the gastrointestinal tract and liver. This route of delivery typically provides an absorption of 4-20 % of the CBD after ingestion. However, particles smaller than 100 nanometers can pass straight through biological membranes in the body. Hence, it 
became apparent to the Voon team that it was vital to develop an in-mouth CBD pouch product that is water-soluble with cannabinoid particle size below 100 nanometers by leveraging nano-emulsified CBD.
After vigorous research, development and testing, the Voon team was able to formally introduce its CBD innovation in the form of slim white in-mouth pouches, each packed with 20mg of nano-infused CBD that allows for enhanced bioavailability and elevated absorption. Similar to other CBD pouches in the market but much smaller in size, Voon pouches are to be placed between the upper lip and gums to let release its contents via the mucosal membranes. The pouches also come in the delicious flavours of Pink Grape, Snazzy Tangerine, Cool Spearmint and Wintergreen – which can last up to 30-45 minutes depending on the user’s usage and preference.
