Labour Life Peer, Anthony Young, The Lord Young of Norwood Green (pictured below), a prominent apprenticeship ambassador, previous General Secretary of the National Communications Union, and Governor of the BBC, and Dr Shaun Fitzgerald (pictured above), a Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professor in Sustainable Buildings at the University of Cambridge, will be among the keynote speakers for IHEEM’s Healthcare Estates Digital Week.
The programme of online events takes place from 5-9 October, with the speaker line-up now taking shape.
Dr Fitzgerald is a member of the SAGE Environmental Modelling Group, and a lead author of the CIBSE COVID-19 Ventilation Guidance. He founded and led Breathing Buildings, a spin-out from Cambridge University which is ‘a leader in hybrid ventilation systems.’ He has provided ventilation design advice for many buildings within healthcare and beyond, both in the UK and in countries with ‘a more continental-type climate’. In his online presentation, ‘Ventilation in a post-COVID world’, he will discuss how the importance of adequate ventilation for health and safety has been heightened as a result of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. He said: “One of the recommended mitigation measures is the provision of plentiful amounts of fresh air to buildings to help dilute any airborne pathogens. It is easier to achieve this in temperate weather, but there are challenges as to how buildings should be designed and

operated to cope in high and low temperature conditions. We will discuss the importance of, and practical ways to ensure, provision of adequate amounts of fresh air, while also considering the capital and energy costs of doing so.”
