Planning for this year’s Healthcare Estates is progressing, with a record number of papers having been submitted to the IHEEM Conference Committee for its consideration.
The presentations the Committee has chosen for inclusion across the two-day event align with the Four Key Themes for the Conference:
Professor Cath Noakes
Presentations in the Engineering stream include a look at the use of technology in the digital transformation of an NHS Trust, and the design of a new Emergency Department using a collaborative approach to incorporate lessons learned and create a clinically-driven design. In the Strategic & Capital Planning stream, presenters will discuss a number of new projects within the NHS in which multiple stakeholders have come together to engage and contribute different perspectives, resulting in projects with enhanced performance in terms of efficiency, sustainability, clinical performance, and energy efficiency. For the Net Zero conference theme, case studies from healthcare settings large and small will be used to illustrate how to reduce carbon emissions, and there will be a post-occupancy review of an existing Passivhaus project and its performance in its first year of operation. The Workforce stream will focus on a range of subjects, including the importance of, and strategies for, caring for employees’ mental health. and developing a workforce that meets the needs of the future.
A record number of submissions

I am delighted that we have also confirmed several keynote speakers for the four sessions across the two days. These include David Melbourne, Designate Chief Executive of the Birmingham and Solihull Integrated Care Board (ICB), who will join me for a panel discussion on the opening day. We are again honoured to have Professor Cath Noakes – Professor of Environmental Engineering for Buildings at the University of Leeds, Professor Peter Guthrie – Professor of Engineering for Sustainable Development at the University of Cambridge, and Professor Shaun Fitzgerald – Director of Research in the Centre for Climate Repair at Cambridge, join us for our keynote session on Engineering. Further keynote speakers will be announced as the programme develops. We have introduced the panel discussion format this year to enable our delegate audience to engage in these sessions in a way they have not been able to before, and they will take place in a purpose-built theatre next to the new ‘IHEEM Members’ space.”
Six theatres covering key topics
In addition to the main conference programme, there will be six Theatres covering the following specialist topics: Fire and Medical Gas; HVAC and Engineering; Infection Control and Water; Energy and Sustainability; Facilities Management, and Design and Construction. Contributing to the programmes in these theatres are SOPHE, the Water Management Society, the Legionella Control Association, The Carbon and Energy Fund, Architects for Health, and NAHFO, with more to be announced.
Exhibition space has already sold out – a first in the event’s history, and with over 180 exhibitors already in place, the 2022 event is set to be the largest yet. Additional space has been acquired to accommodate any companies and organisations still looking to engage with the healthcare engineering and EFM community. Attendees and delegates visiting Healthcare Estates 2022 will be able to engage with companies offering the latest innovations and products.
Awards at ‘Landmark’ Manchester hotel

The Gala Dinner and Awards will be held on the evening of 4 October at The Kimpton Clocktower Hotel, a historic landmark in Manchester. This popular social occasion, which sold out in 2019, features a drinks reception and gala three-course dinner with after-dinner speaker, and, of course, the prestigious awards ceremony. Entries are now open, with three new awards for this year: Diversity and Inclusion, Estates and Facilities Champion of Champions, and Staff Wellbeing Initiative. Other awards returning to the event are: Architectural Practice of the Year, Consultancy of the Year, Estates and Facilities Team of the Year, New Build Project of the Year, Product Innovation of the Year, Refurbishment Project of the Year, Sustainable Achievement, Supplier of the Year, and Apprentice of the Year. The deadline for entries is 1 July 2022.
IHEEM has listened carefully to members, Company Affiliates, and exhibitors, and is making the 2022 event more affordable and more accessible. A significantly revised ticket pricing structure has been introduced for 2022 based on a saving of at least £50 per day across all entry ticket prices (against 2019 rates). ‘Early bird’ rates, which run until 30 June 2022, also give member and non-member delegates a further opportunity to make savings.
