With over 5000 patients using its service each year, West Hampshire Community Diabetes Service, part of Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust, is at the forefront of the fight against rising diabetes levels across the South West.
Managing patients’ weight is an essential part of its service, particularly for those with Type 2 diabetes and the team look to use the latest advancements in body composition technology to encourage users to stay healthy.
Tanita, the world leader in body composition technology, has been integral to this process. The Trust has been using Tanita devices for the past ten years to help monitor and evaluate patients, recently upgrading to the MC – 780MA model, the very latest in medical-grade Bioelectric Impedance Analysis (BIA) technology.
These give the most comprehensive overview of health and fitness, providing a full medical-grade segmental body composition analysis including measuring body fat, water levels, bone density, metabolic rate, muscle mass and visceral fat in less than 20 seconds.
Sarah Woodman, Head of Diabetes and diabetes specialist dietitian at West Hampshire Community Diabetes Service, said: “Body mass and diabetes are intrinsically linked and losing weight healthily is often the first step for many patients looking to manage and improve their condition.
“Many can become demotivated though by focusing too heavily on pounds lost rather than considering their overall health journey. We’ve found using body composition is a much more encouraging tool that demonstrates to patients that they are improving their body’s health, even if weight loss is plateauing.
“We use body composition as a key educational tool and often take our Tanita devices to external events, so it was important to have the most accurate technology possible. We want to encourage the general public to adopt healthier attitudes before irreversible conditions like diabetes develop, and receiving such an in-depth evaluation of the body can be a real wake-up call.”
Simon Bradeley, commercial manager at Tanita UK, said: “There are an estimated 4 million people currently living in the UK with diabetes and this number is increasing each year. Many cases of Type 2 diabetes are preventable through healthier lifestyles and we’re proud that our technology is supporting the NHS in helping manage this serious concern.”
