A new study* comparing bioperl® cleaning kit for bodily fluid spills with an incumbent spill kit system was presented as a poster at the recent Infection Prevention 2023 conference. The study authors from the University of the West of Scotland concluded that bioperl® offers ‘easier’ methods of cleaning, is ‘safe’ and ‘environmentally friendlier’ than the comparator standardised spillage kits currently used in healthcare.
Participants in the study (acting as patients and health professionals) were asked to clean up various simulated body fluid spills using the comparative spill kits provided (including instructions for use) which differed in component parts, assembly, and their use.
Each simulated biological spill scenario was video recorded and individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with both patients and health professionals. The simulated biological spills consisted of blood, urine, vomit and faeces.
Respondents found the instructions for bioperl® were easier to follow with clear, identifiable diagrams. They also stated it was helpful that bioperl® is a ‘one size fits all’ kit suitable for all biological spills. Conversely, the comparator kits’ instructions were more detailed and lengthier meaning that in some instances, participants were unsure which kit to use for which type of spill.
bioperl® was observed by both patients and health professionals to have increased absorption compared to the incumbent kits. This meant that health professionals felt it allowed them to deal with spillages more quickly, leading to potentially less psychological discomfort for the patient.
The plastic scoop and scraper provided with the incumbent spill kits came pre-formed, ready for use which was seen as simple. However, the scoop was too small to clear up the spills effectively. The larger, cardboard dustpan and scraper provided with bioperl® was felt to work well and cleared the spill more effectively.
bioperl® cleaning kit for bodily fluid spills was developed to address the need for a single cleaning and disinfection product which can be used on all bodily spills. Blood, urine and vomit can be cleaned with one easy to use product. The unique formulation is based on a natural mineral, and combines high absorbency of liquids (up to 3 litres) with an antimicrobial action. It eliminates the need for mops, buckets and the excessive use of paper products; meaning it has strong sustainability credentials.
bioperl® is available to order from NHS Supply Chain and through the National Services Scotland framework.
