Some special celebrations took place at Home Close residential care home in Fulbourn, Cambridgeshire this week, to mark resident Vera Hawkins’ (nee Badman) 101st birthday.
Vera, who has been a resident at Home Close since early 2018 and a part of the Cambridgeshire community for 80 years, was delighted to celebrate her special birthday in the company of much loved family and friends, alongside the home’s annual summer fete.
Born in Saffron Walden in Essex, Vera married her husband Albert Hawkins in 1940. She moved to Sawston in Cambridgeshire in 1948 where she worked as domestic help and has lived in the county ever since. Vera has one daughter, Greeta, two grandchildren, five great grandchildren and one great great grandchild, with another due later this year. When asked what the secret is to a long and happy life, her daughter said, it is ‘lots of laughter and a good sense of humour’.
Confirms Cristina Mihai, manager of Home Close: “Vera is such a lovely lady – always smiling and chatting. We were delighted to be able to mark her special birthday on the day of our summer fete this weekend. We thought it was a lovely opportunity to celebrate her birthday with friends and family in our courtyard, while the annual Garden Party was being held in our gardens, with all our entertainment and games. It really was a very special day.”
